Fire Fighting

Firefighting is a profession aimed at controlling and extinguishing fires. A person who engages in firefighting is known as a firefighter or fireman.

Firefighting Tactics and Tools:
Firefighters proceed rapidly to the fire site, assessing the situation based on the building’s construction and fire protection systems.
Systematic firefighting involves four steps:

  • Protection: Safeguard uninvolved buildings and areas.
  • Confinement: Control the leading edge of the flame using water or cooling agents.
  • Ventilation: Create openings to allow toxic combustion products and hot air to escape.
  • Extinguishment: Use water, fuel or oxidant removal, or chemical flame inhibition based on the fire type.

Firefighters face risks such as toxic environments, structural collapse, and falls while navigating unfamiliar layouts or confined spaces.

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) helps protect against toxic fumes.

Fire suppression system Services

A fire suppression system detects and suppresses fires before they can spread and cause damage. These systems use various technologies to respond to fires quickly;

Types of Suppression Systems

  • Gas-based fire suppression systems
  • Powder-based fire suppression systems
  • Water-based fire suppression systems

Fire Trucks

Fire Engine (Pumper Truck): Also known as a fire lorry or fire truck.

Primary purpose: To transport firefighters to the scene of a fire and carry water (often hundreds of gallons) for fire fighting. Equipped with firefighting tools such as thermal imaging cameras, self-contained breathing apparatuses, fire hoses, and more. May have a fixed deluge gun for directing water. Some engine trucks have reconnected (ready-to-use hose lines).

Ladder Truck (Aerial Apparatus):
Often called fire trucks (which can be confusing).
Features a boom that extends outward.
Used for firefighting in high-rises and tall buildings.
Does not carry water but provides access for firefighters.
May have additional equipment like ladders and hydraulic rescue tools.

Rescue/Special Operations Truck:
Carries specialized equipment for technical rescues (e.g., extricating people from vehicles, collapsed structures, or confined spaces).
Equipped with tools like the “jaws of life” and floodlights.

Brush Truck:
Designed for wildland firefighting.
Smaller and more maneuverable for off-road use.
Equipped to handle grass fires and forest fires.
